Sofitel Ipanema Hotel
Rio, Brazil
General description
Complete refurbishment of the SOFITEL Ipanema, an existing hotel overlooking Copacabana Beach in Rio. Standing at 82m tall, it is the tallest building in the bay as its construction permit was issued before urban planning conditions changed and limited the maximum height of buildings in the area.
The renovation aims to enhance the occupants' experience and increase the level of fire protection in this historic hotel. It includes:
- About a dozen rooms per floor, spread across 17 levels
- A conference hall
- Meeting rooms
- A fitness center
- A SPA
- Two luxury restaurants with kitchens, one of which is located at the top of the tower (23rd floor) with a bar and a pool offering panoramic views of the bay.
In total, the hotel will accommodate approximately 1600 people.
Studio Fahrenheit was commissioned by the ACCOR group to assist in the project's design and develop the fire safety strategy based on a performance-based approach to meet the objectives of the ACCOR group's internal hotel standard (BTH), while adapting to the local context (emergency service operating method, architectural constraints, fire protection system suppliers). To best meet the BTH requirements, the project was developed by comparing and basing recommendations on French, English, and American regulations.
